St. Albans, VT – Vermonters First today launched a new television ad
to draw much needed attention to some Vermont Democrats’ intentions to
expand the state’s sales tax to include services. (The :30 spot can be
viewed HERE.)
This regressive tax hike will hit the middle class and poor Vermonters
hardest as they continue to struggle to get by during this tough
economic time. The proposal will hurt Vermont’s many small business
owners who work hard to deliver services we depend on every day.
At a press conference on May 9th, 2012, Speaker of the House Shap
Smith (D-Morristown) proposed expanding Vermont’s sales tax to include
services, and indicated he planned to bring this issue to the
Legislature in 2013. (Vermont Digger, 5/10/2012 ).
Asked in the VPR gubernatorial debate about an expanded sales tax as a
possible way to finance single-payer health care, Governor Peter
Shumlin did not rule it out, saying, “The options, we all know, are
the options you just outlined….”
Vermonters First Treasurer, Tayt Brooks had this to say, “Democratic
leaders have gone on record saying they want to consider this
irresponsible tax expansion in the coming legislative session.
Vermonters should ask their local legislative candidates how they
would vote on an expanded sales tax. We hope this ad helps put a
spotlight on this important issue.”
